Taking care of tiles properly helps maintain their look and extend their life. Here’s a simple guide depending on the type of tile and general maintenance tips:
⸻
- General Tile Care (All Types)
• Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris that can scratch the surface.
• Mop with a gentle cleaner (pH-neutral is ideal) – avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia unless the tile manufacturer recommends it.
• Wipe spills immediately to avoid staining, especially on grout lines or porous tiles.
⸻
- Ceramic & Porcelain Tiles
• Use mild detergent and warm water for mopping.
• Avoid oil-based or wax-based cleaners – they can make the surface slippery or cause build-up.
• These are low-maintenance but keep the grout clean too.
⸻
- Natural Stone Tiles (Marble, Granite, Slate, etc.)
• Use a stone-specific cleaner – standard cleaners can etch or dull the surface.
• Seal regularly (every 6–12 months) to protect against stains and water damage.
• Don’t use vinegar, lemon juice, or anything acidic – it can damage the stone.
⸻
- Grout Maintenance
• Clean grout lines with a baking soda and water paste or a grout cleaner.
• Consider sealing grout every year to prevent discoloration and moisture damage.
• Use a toothbrush or small brush for deep cleaning.
⸻
Extra Tips
• Use door mats or rugs to reduce dirt tracked in.
• Avoid dragging heavy furniture across tiles – use pads under legs.
• For glazed tiles, buffing occasionally with a dry cloth helps maintain shine.
